5 Secrets for Happy Kids and Obsession-Worthy Images

What to know before your session - so you can enjoy the process and leave happy

Let go of perfect. You hired me because you want real, beautiful images… and the truth is, those never come from stiff smiles and everyone looking at the camera at the same time. They come from letting your family be your family. Let the kids be silly. Let there be little moments. Let me do my job. When you loosen up, the magic happens… and I promise, the images will be better for it.

  1. Bring snacks!

Nobody wants their photo taken when they're hungry… especially little ones. Feed your kids before the session, pack something for a mid-shoot break if needed, and don't be afraid to use snacks as a reward to look forward to after. Hangry is not a look we are going for!

  2. Bring their favorite thing

A beloved stuffed animal, a shaker toy, a squeaky… whatever gets a genuine reaction from your child. I'll hold it next to my lens or have a parent do the same to capture that real, bright-eyed look. It works every time.

  3. Think about timing

Schedule your session around your family's natural rhythm. If bedtime is 7pm, a 7:30pm session isn't setting anyone up for success. If dinner is at 6pm, plan accordingly (see secret #1). The right time makes everything easier.

  4. Choose a location that fits your family

A busy dock with a toddler is a recipe for stress. A wide open field with an energetic six-year-old? That's a recipe for magic. Let's build your session around what your kid actually loves. When they're free to move and be themselves, the photos will show it. Trust me when I say releasing a little control leads to images that "cheese" photos never could.

  5. My favorite - Everything is AMAZING!

This one is my personal favorite. Whatever your child does during the session… celebrate it like it's the greatest thing you've ever seen. Be their biggest cheerleader. Photos can hide a lot, but they can't hide your expression. When you treat every moment as wonderful, your kids respond in kind… and we end up with a gallery full of images where everyone looks their absolute best.

There are lots of other things to consider before your family session, but in my opinion the above are the most important components that can take a session from good to great.

Now, let’s take all this and craft a session around your family!
